Why Remove Dealer Stickers?

Car sticker

Dealer stickers are often placed on cars to advertise the dealership. While some people don’t mind them, others find them unsightly. Car owners want to remove these stickers in order to:

  • Improve the Car’s Appearance: A clean, sticker-free car looks more polished and professional. It allows the car’s design to shine without any distractions.
  • Avoid Free Advertising for the Dealership: Unless you have a special agreement with the dealership, there’s no need to provide them with free advertising.
  • Personalize Your Vehicle: Removing the dealer sticker is often the first step in personalizing your car. Whether you want to add your own decals or keep it clean, getting rid of the dealer sticker gives you a blank canvas.

Materials Needed

Before starting, gather the following materials:

  • Hair Dryer or Heat Gun: These tools will help soften the adhesive, making the sticker easier to remove.
  • Plastic Razor Blade or Plastic Card: These tools are gentle on your car’s paint and can help lift the sticker without causing scratches.
  • Adhesive Remover (e.g., Goo Gone, WD40): These products are designed to break down the adhesive residue left behind after the sticker is removed.
  • Car Soap and Water: Cleaning the area before and after sticker removal ensures that no dirt or residue is left behind.
  • Non-Abrasive Cloth or Sponge: These are essential for wiping away adhesive remover and cleaning the area without scratching the paint.
  • Microfiber Towel: It will help you dry the area thoroughly and buff out any minor scratches.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Clean the Area

First, use a soft sponge or cloth with car soap to gently scrub the area. This step is to remove any dirt and dust that could scratch the paint during the removal process. It also helps you see the edges of the sticker more clearly.

Rinse with clean water and dry with a microfiber towel. Make sure the area is completely dry before moving on to the next step.

2. Heat the Sticker

Warm the sticker by holding a hair dryer or heat gun a few inches away and moving it back and forth.

The heat will soften the adhesive, thus making it easier to peel off the sticker. Such step is important for preventing the sticker from tearing or leaving too much residue. Be careful not to overheat the area, as it could damage the paint.

3. Peel the Sticker

After warming the sticker, gently lift its edge using your fingernail, a plastic razor blade, or a plastic card. Peel it off slowly, starting from one corner and moving across. If it resists, apply more heat and try again, being careful to avoid tearing the sticker or scratching the paint.

Being gentle guarantees that you don’t damage the paint or leave too much adhesive residue behind. Rushing this step can lead to more work later on.

4. Remove Adhesive Residue

After the sticker is removed, there may be some adhesive residue left behind. Adhesive residue can attract dirt and grime, making the area look dirty and unkempt.

Apply a a small amount of adhesive remover like Goo Gone or WD40 to a cloth and gently rub the residue. Let it sit for a few minutes to break down the adhesive. Then, use a non-abrasive cloth or sponge to wipe away the residue.

5. Clean and Polish

Finally, wash the area again with car soap and water to remove any remaining adhesive remover. Dry the area with a microfiber towel. If you notice any minor scratches, apply a small amount of rubbing compound to a clean cloth and gently buff the area in a circular motion.
